what might have been lost?

Due to the plethora of heart-rendering, thought-provokin 'new folk' musicians that derive from the States, to be truly surprised by one is something incredulously rare. Bon Iver, from the French 'bon hiver' which translates as 'good winter', released his solo debut this year.

The nine song collection, entitled For Emma, Forever Ago, provides a whistle stop tour of a bleak, austere emotional landscape. Emotive lyrics hang from the lips throughout, but the one which lingers most, time after time, comes from 'The Wolves (Act I and II)' where Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) considers 'What might have been lost?' over and over. This heartbreak only just begins to set the tone for the album.

This relatively short collection of songs, regardless of numerical length, provides a beautiful, rare and voyeuristic reflection of Vernon's view of the world. Vernon's songwriting is of a much higher standard than most of the garrulous singer-songwriters that flood the market today; instead he provides to his listeners consistently coherent, ridiculously emotive, and life-affirming interpretation and understanding, of previously arcane tales of life, and love.

This album was recorded in a cabin in Wisconsin; for four months Vernon locked himself away. He ate what deer he caught that day, drank what he could, and wrote and recorded the songs that are now seen on this album. Here the isolation of the recording, transcends through the songs magically and once again it helps the listener feel privileged to be let in like this.

The isolation for Vernon also seems to have helped keep this folk sound relatively fresh; while comparisons can be drawn with the likes of Iron & Wine, Bon Iver's sound really is his own, even if he has not solely created it himself.

This album may only be nine tracks in length, but this truly feels like nine parts of someone's life that the world has been let into. The songs don't need to prove how from the heart they are, because each track's sincerity bleeds through the speakers. Bon Iver's bruised and slightly unnerving experiences make beautiful music, and as well as being, thus far 2008's most intimate record, it is also by far one of its best.
